Student Motivation can be a tricky issue. We have all had days where we felt less motivated than others. I do believe there is a direct correlation between my attitude and enthusiasm and that of the students in my class. I can try to improve the conditions to encourage motivation but there has to be some effort on the part of the student as well.
I encourage all my students based on their efforts not their success. I think that it is extremely important to positive recognition and encouragement the effort of those who are struggling. It's important that I am more than a cheerleader, but at the same time not giving away answers too quickly and sabotaging the need for motivation and learning. Rewarding effort and ignoring whining or other negative displays are some of the ways I can get the students on the right track.
