There are some great Ted Talk videos by Ken Robinson with education themes. The most recent, Bring on the Learning Revolution! was posted in September 2015.
With a warm, engaging manner, he challenges the idea that education is a linear process that has the goal of preparing all learners for college at 18. Robinson challenges this mindset and states a revolution is required.
“The human communities depend upon a diversity of talent and not a singular conception of ability.
We all have different aptitudes but it is also about passion. People opt out of education because it doesn’t feed their spirit."
He believes Education should be customized and personalized.
" We must move from an industrial model of education which is based on linearity, conformity, and batching people to one that is more of an organic process designed to help people flourish." The outcome cannot be predicted, but the conditions that will allow people to flourish should be put in place.
Education must be transformed, not reformed, and people must be given the tools and technology to design their own personalized curriculum.
I agree - to a point. In Arts, Humanities, and Philosophy, this methodology would be great. Those in STEM fields need the traditional model to acquire the knowledge and skills of their chosen professions. I certainly would not want a Doctor who didn't undergo the full rigor of the current system of medical education.
