The Teaching Perspectives Inventory is a free, online, self-assessment of your teaching. It should focus on one specific group of students to provide a specific profile for your teaching in that class. Through question using a Likert scale, the TPI assessment will measure the relevance of five areas of teaching for you. They are:
Transmission
Apprenticeship
Developmental
Nurturing
Social Reform
As an instructor in a college level Vocational Trades setting, I have a relatively specific focus of what knowledge i am trying to pass on to students and how I support the development of their competency in the practical application of that knowledge. It was no surprise then that my highest score was in Apprenticeship, and the second highest was Transmission. I have to have a high level of mastery in my field to be a good teacher, and I have to transfer that and give students the opportunity to practice and hone their skills.
Conversely, there is little room for social Reform discourse in a Trades and Technology setting, so it was definitely no surprise that was by far the lowest score I had.
Of course, learning is most effective when it s conducted in a safe, non-judgmental and encouraging environment, so my scores were also relatively high in Nurturing and Developmental. Students start off with simple ideas and tasks, and progress on to more complex systems where troubleshooting and problem solving become key components of their learning.
For me, the Teaching Perspectives Inventory is an effective way to check if my teaching is where I think it should be to give my students the most effective classroom experience with an appropriate balance of approach.
