Diversity could be seen as a bit of a charged word. Certainly it means different things to different people. In The Skillful Teacher Chapter 8, Brookfield looks beyond superficial measures of diversity like ethnicity. He describes diversity in terms of how students learn, think, and see the world.
Working in a College in Qatar teaching in the skilled trades, I see less diversity than would be found in a typical Canadian college classroom; at least by superficial measures of diversity like race and religion. I do however see students with different learning preferences; introverts and extroverts; kinesthetic and visual and aural learners; and active or passive learners. Regardless of the types of students, I need to keep things fresh and change up activities to maximize learning opportunities that might strike a chord with some of my students and help them engage.
No matter what, I have certain prejudices or predispositions that might not be the right teaching style for all my students. Whatever I can do within reason to overcome that will help my students in their learning journey. That is the ultimate goal.
